Choosing a kitchen sink should be a reflection of your style, functionality that best handles your daily tasks and needs to work well with the person that will be using it. Some people think that the sink selection is the single most important decision to be made when getting new countertops. There are plenty of sinks to choose from in the market so here is what to consider when selecting your sink for your new countertops.
Sinks are manufactured from different types of material. The most common is stainless steel. Stainless steel sinks are very durable and easy to clean but can scratch if not maintained properly. Enamel coated cast iron sinks have a very authentic look and come in array of different colors. These type sinks can chip if not used properly and can get marks on them from your metal pots and pans. Another type sink material is Granite Composite. These sinks are made form granite particles and polymers and come in a variety of colors. This material is resistant to scratches and chips but can stain if not maintained per the manufacturers care and maintenance guidelines.
The number of basins in the sink is another decision that will need to be made. A large single basin sink allows you to soak large pots and pans or prepare large quantities of food but is not functional for multi-tasking as one large bowl limits you from doing to different tasks at the same time. On the flip side, a double basin sink does allow multiple tasks to be done at the same time since there are two bowls in the sink. Since there are two bowls, the bowl sizes are smaller and this may limit the size of pots and pans that will fit in the sink. Double basin sinks do have different size basins so you will need to select this when selecting the double basin sink. There are multiple options to choose from but the 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30 are the most common style double basin sinks and each have their own advantages.
It is very important when making your new sink selection to get with your fabricator, designer or contractor before the sink is purchased. There are a couple of things to take in to consideration before purchasing the sink. The sink shape can dictate the type of faucet and accessories that can be used and cabinet sizes can determine the size of the sink that will fit in the allotted space.
